Build an AI travel agent that fulfills ancillaries, not just plans

By Loris Mazloum

“AI travel planner” and “AI travel agent” are high-intent builder phrases. Most demos stop at suggestions: cities, hotels, a sample day plan. Production products lose users when the agent cannot attach the rest of the trip—cover, data, lounge, fast track—without dumping the traveller into five tabs.

This guide is for B2B teams building those agents and for OTAs wiring an agent layer on existing booking rails.

Plan vs fulfill

Layer Planner-quality Agent-quality
Flights / stays Search + compare Hold / book / change hooks
Ancillaries “You might want insurance” link Quote → confirm → issue in-session
Evidence Marketing claims Per-tool success, latency, last-OK
Failure Apologise Idempotent retry, refunded holds, structured 402/503

Ancillaries are where many “planner” codebases quietly die: each category has its own supplier, contract, and widget. Agents need a shelf, not a pile of deep links.

Reference stack (conceptual)

  1. Air / stays API — your source of truth for the ticket or room (e.g. modern flights APIs such as Duffel).
  2. Ancillary marketplace or BYO connectors — insurance, eSIM, lounge, fast track, transfers, document checks.
  3. Agent runtime — MCP and/or REST tools with strict schemas.
  4. Ledger — per-call cost, customer tags, budgets, audit.
  5. Playbooks — SKILL.md-style recipes (layover kit, long-haul kit) so behaviour is versioned.

Ancilair focuses on (2)–(5) for the non-ticket shelf: MCP · REST · CLI, one token, supplier rates passed through with 0% markup on the hosted marketplace. See the product overview at ancilair.com.

Minimum viable ancillary set

Ship tools that map to clear traveller jobs:

Pair with After Duffel: who books lounge, eSIM, and insurance? if air is already live.

Questions

What is the difference between an AI travel planner and an AI travel agent?
Planners emphasise itinerary generation and research. Agents that ship revenue and support load also need booking and post-booking fulfillment—including ancillaries outside the ticket.
Which ancillaries should ship in v1?
Start from jobs your users already ask for after a flight exists: cover, connectivity, layover comfort, and queue skipping. Add transfers and document checks when your corridors need them.
Do we need MCP to build an AI travel agent?
No. REST is enough for headless services. MCP helps when the product is chat- or IDE-native and you want standard tool discovery.
